Building Urban Ecosystems for Lifelong Learning

The CONNECT project aims to leverage the impact of Learning Cities through building urban ecosystems of lifelong learning that harness the assets of European cities and transform them into a network of seamless pathways of learning experience for adult learners.

In a society where existing educational pathways no longer guarantee opportunity, and with a growing gap between the haves and the have-nots, connected learning for all citizens can open up new entry points and pathways to opportunity; in particular when integrating both the potential of ubiquitious learning technology and learning opportunities created by European cities.

CONNECT will be piloted in 5 European cities:

Ecosystem model

Step 1

Building a generic model of urban ecosystems of learning, based on case studies in 5 European cities: Munich, Kallithea, Bucharest, Valencia and Dublin. The model will make visible the different layers and networks making the learning ecosystem of a city, and showing how both local and digital learning resources can be integrated into the broader concept of connected learning. The challenge of the partnership will be to bring into the picture local issues, recognizing the critical role of technology-enhanced learning, supporting not only interactions with others around the world, but also with people and organisations nearby.

City-wide hubs
for lifelong learning
in networked environments

Step 2

Developing state-of-the-art city-wide learning hubs, incorporating workspaces (discovery spaces, maker spaces, spaces for reflection) and tools which by learners can be used to determine the things they want to learn, set up learning projects and build connections with learning that happens across multiple contexts of the city. The Web platform is based on a quite new concept, bringing together the 8 principles of connected learning under one roof. Moreover, the web platform marks a cornerstone towards building technology-enhanced learning environments, since it aims at merging the local dimension of learning with the global aspect of the internet.

Step 3

Piloting scenarios for city-wide learning, each of which is covering a specific set of citizen needs in the 21st century, such as

  • Citizenship in our local and global society
  • Health and sustainable lifestyle
  • Becoming makers of the knowledge society
  • Personal and professional advancement

Scenarios for building
21st century skills through
connected learning

Step 4

Building the personal and organisational capacities necessary to effectively faciliate citizens' learning journeys, including training modules, that are dedicated to meet the needs of disadvantaged target groups. Those modules in particular comprise methods of empowerment and building of learning capacities in adults remote from learning.
